World Wildlife Conservation Day

Why should I be interested in world wildlife conservation day?

The world is losing animals to extinction every day. These extinctions are largely caused by human behaviour. There are some very compelling reasons to be interested. Have we not all marvelled at the wonder of nature? Wide eyed children seeing a tiger or elephant for the first time. Or an adult taking their first safari and seeing a lion in the wild, and if you haven’t been lucky enough then a visit to the zoo.

No change would lead to these wonderful creatures could only be seen in digital archives and books. The stark reality is this is the world we are hurtling towards at a pace. As it stands today over 41,000 species of animal are at risk of extinction.

Are there animals at risk in the UK?

All animals should be saved and cherished. It is scary to think that even animals in our own backyards are at risk. These include hedgehogs, red squirrels, the Scottish Wildcat, Beavers to name just a few. All positive action will affect animals worldwide and those on our doorstep.

What can be done?

Everyone can make small changes to help the environment our the animals that live in it. Below are some simple things that could go a long way to helping:

  • Avoid buying animal products containing endangered species (for example Ivory, Mink etc)
  • Check ingredient lists on all products (some makeup may contain animal products
  • Avoid products that damage the environment such as plastics and buy alternatives or recycled products
  • Eat less or no meat -livestock production takes up a lot of land which leads to destruction of important habitats
  • Sign petitions that you believe in, you don’t have to be an activist to make a small difference. This could be via major organisation like WWF or smaller local organisations like Somerset Wildlife Trust
  • Adopt an animal, again the WWF offer this. This will give you the opportunity to directly support an animal at risk
