There are some advantages to the weather being dry and sunny if you are a dog owner – less muddy towels to wash and floors to mop! But when the heat really picks up, we need to look out for our dogs. Here are our top tips to keep a dog cool in hot weather.

Shade and plenty of it

One of the most important aspects to keeping your dog cool is to make sure they have access to shade. Perhaps you could create some outdoor shaded areas with sheets pegged up or using a tarpaulin. You could even keep your dog indoors. It is likely to be cooler, especially at the hottest parts of the day.

Plenty of water

Always make sure your dog has access to plenty of cool water. This might mean leaving out more than one water bowl, and also putting a water bowl out in the shade if they are keen to be outdoors. Some dogs love a shallow paddling pool to have a play in to help keep them cool.

Walks and play when it’s cooled down

On the hottest of days, you might need to change your routine so you can walk your dog in the coolest part of the day. It’s also very important to protect their paws from hot pavements and surfaces if you have to take them out when it is hot. Remember, dogs can’t talk, so they won’t be able to tell you it’s too hot for their paws.

Keep them cool

Whilst you’re at home you could provide some damp towels for your dog to lie on. You could also use a hot water bottle filled with ice. A popular option is to give your dog some iced treats (bought or homemade) or just some ice-tubes! Oscar & Hooch used to enjoy a good crunch on iced cubes! Also remember to keep your dog well groomed. Any excess hair that builds up or gets matted will hold the heat. Regular home grooming or visits to the groomers will keep their fur healthy for hot weather.

We can all enjoy the hot weather, even our four legged friends!
