Dog Friendly Hotels and Staycations UK

When it comes to going on holiday, we’ve found ourselves, more and more, staycationing here in the UK. For one it means logistics are easier and we don’t have to fly. But more importantly, Henry can come with us! Here we share some of our favourite dog friendly hotels and staycations in the UK.

Why staycation?

For us, we feel the UK has plenty to offer. From the rugged coastal counties of Cornwall and Dorset, to the lush and expansive Yorkshire Dales. Some of our best holidays have been in the UK with the dogs. Give me a long dog walk with a pub stop over a hot sandy beach every day of the week! We like to be active, outside everyday, seeing the countryside. Of course there’s down time. Henry is quite partial to a snuggle on the sofa after a long day walking!

Where to stay?

We’re all different, but some key criteria when holidaying with your dog will include: pet friendly accommodation, some enclosed outdoor space, and perhaps somewhere nice nearby to eat and get a drink. Read on for our recommendations.

The White House, Watergate Bay

With its private path almost all the way down to the beach at Watergate Bay, the Whitehouse offers privately owned apartments to rent. You can find these on various websites (AirBnB, www.cottages.com and others). You’ll need to check the details for which are pet friendly – this one definitely is as we’ve stayed here. But since Watergate Bay is a dog friendly beach all year, this is a great location for daily coastal dog walks. There’s good options for food here too – with the outdoor pizza shack in the summer as well as The Beach Hut right on the beach (dog friendly!) The actual hotel at Watergate Bay is also dog friendly but can be expensive depending on when you’re going.

The Acorn Inn, Dorset

Nestled within Thomas Hardy’s enchanting village of Evershot, The Acorn Inn is a welcoming 16th century coaching Inn. They pride themselves on welcoming animals as warmly as they welcome their owners. Offering easy access to countryside and coast (not far away) this is a perfect location for a staycation with your dog. Some doggie highlights include:

  • Dog water bowls by the bar
  • Doggie biscuits at the bar
  • Beer garden with dog waste bin
  • Water bowls, towels, treats provided in bedrooms

We had a lovely stay here with Henry. Nothing was too much for the staff and Henry was thoroughly spoilt! He even had a special doggie breakfast! (by the way, the restaurant serves delicious food). Well worth a visit in our opinion.

Fairings, St Ives

If you like coastal walks with the option of some seaside fun, then this house on the outskirts of St Ives is very comfortable for a large family or 2 families staycationing together. It is very well equipped and comfortable. The South West Coast Path is literally a 2 minute walk up the lane. If you want to walk down into St Ives, it will take a good 20 minutes but there are plenty of dog friendly places to visit once you get down there. Just remember to check which beaches welcome dogs and at what time of day (if at all) depending on what time of year you are visiting. We did the amazing St Ives to Zennor walk, finishing at The Tinners Arms. This is a spectacular walk but takes a good few hours.

Muker, Yorkshire Dales

We absolutely love the Yorkshire Dales. And one of our favourite places is Swaledale. From the little hamlet of Muker, you can do some excellent walks and the local pub, The Farmers Arms (now a community pub) is the perfect place to grab some dinner or just a drink after a long walk. We stayed at pet friendly Wayside Farm. This is a very comfortable and again well equipped holiday cottage. The only downside in summer is there is limited outdoor space, but there is a bench outside for soaking up some evening rays.

Our favourite Yorkshire Dales dog walks can be viewed here.

If you find yourself at any of the above, we’d love to know what you think! Or if you have any top tips or recommendations for us, please let us know!
