When it comes to choosing a collar, there are certain key factors you want to consider. In a nutshell, we think you need a safe collar that is comfortable. So you have to consider safety aspects and also sizing and materials.
It’s no surprise that puppies are much more boisterous and playful than adult dogs, especially mature adult dogs. Some trainers will recommend clip collars for puppies as they can be released more quickly than a buckle collar. If your puppy or dog was to get their collar caught on something, some people feel it would be easier to have the clip/snap release instead of a buckle. However, on the converse of this, other dog owners prefer metal buckles because they are sturdier and stronger than plastic clips. There is nothing safe about a collar with a plastic clip that breaks. We always had Oscar and Hooch in buckle collars for this very reason. You only need to experience a plastic clip collar failing once to cement doubt about any future plastic clip collar. Metal buckle collars tend to be more expensive than plastic clip collars but for us, we always felt this was an expense worth paying.
If you like buckle collars and have one that fits your dog perfectly then you would be unlikely to switch to a clip collar. However, if you are a dog owner whose dog often falls between the hole sizes, then the adjustability of the clip collar will be very appealing to you and your dog. The ability to adjust a clip collar to the perfect size is a big bonus. This means your dog’s collar will be at its optimum comfort position. If you have a dog that needs grooming regularly, you would also be able to adjust easily for grooming needs.
So what is the answer to clip vs buckle? Ultimately, it is a personal preference whether you choose clip or buckle. We think for adult dogs that either is a good choice, if it fits well. And for puppies, if you can find a good quality clip collar, then this is a good place to start.
